International. Evonik Industries announced the expansion of its capabilities for the refining of pyrogenic silica in Rheinfelden (Germany). The Group will invest an amount in the low double-digit range of millions of euros to expand its facility in Rheinfelden, which further processes hydrophilic silica to a hydrophobic variety.
The expansion, scheduled to go live in late 2020, is associated with Evonik's efforts to consistently expand its silica business for special applications.
"Our expansion in Rheinfelden aims to support the growth of existing application areas in highly specialized fields and open up new innovative uses," says Johannes Ohmer, Member of the Board of Management of Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH.
Hydrophobic pyrogenic silica, which Evonik markets under the Aerosil brand, stands out especially for its low moisture absorption and excellent dispersibility. It is used for rheological control and as an anti-sedimentation agent in coating systems, adhesive and sealing materials and as a thickening and anti-caking agent, for example, in silicone rubber, toners and cosmetics.
"Rheinfelden is the mother plant of our hydrophobic pyrogenic silicas. We decided in favor of expanding the site because the investment will help us make better use of the existing facilities. In addition, the know-how of the local process and the specific long-term experience with the construction and operation of the plants were essential considerations for us," says Andreas Fischer, director of Silica's commercial line.
The investment will expand the company's annual capacity for hydrophilic pyrogenic silica at the existing Rheinfelden site by 20 percent, to meet high market demand.
