International. BYK developed a solvent-free polymer coupling agent to improve the mechanical strength of carbon fiber reinforced radical curing systems, and is the world's first coupling agent for carbon fibers. It is used in vinyl esters and unsaturated polyester resins that are processed into composite parts using carbon fibers.
The strength of the cross-fiber is greatly improved, allowing for much greater design freedom. The BYK-C 8013 increases both the cross-tensile strength and flexible strength of the composite material by means of an improved fiber-matrix bond.
The chemical structure of the additive provides simultaneous adhesion to the fiber and the resin matrix. This unique property allows changes in the design of the component and allows the manufacture of especially durable components. Especially in hot curing processes such as SMC/BMC, pultrusion, prepreg or RTM. The BYK-C 8013 produces an increase in resistance of up to 70 percent.
The reactive additive can be introduced to size during fiber production or into the resin shortly before processing. In the so-called "second preparation" later, BYK-C 8013 can be applied, for example, to the fiber in a spraying process, without the need to remove the first layer beforehand.
