Mexico. Eastman Chemical Uruapan and Fondo Unido inaugurated on January 12 a new classroom for the El Fresno community school, which is part of the "Nacer Aprendiendo" program of the United Fund Mexico Association, and whose main objective is to strengthen children's education in Mexico.
The construction of the classroom began on October 2, 2017 and Eastman donated 20 seats and $ 290,000 Mexican pesos, an amount that was raised from the following three types of donations:
MXN $254,831.86 from the "International Corporate Donation", which comes from the board of Eastman Latin America. MXN $18,512.10 from the "Recycling Donation", obtained through the sale of industrial waste generated by the Uruapan plant to be recycled.
MXN $16,656.04 from the "Donation Contribution Via Payroll", from Uruapan employees who decided to donate voluntarily to Fondo Unido, which is withheld from their payroll monthly.
"Eastman Chemical Uruapan decided to address this infrastructure problem because we know that investing in education is investing in the future of the community. In Uruapan they have covered the needs of basic, upper secondary and higher education but many times their campuses are not in the best conditions, "said Abraham Ray Domínguez, Plant Manager of Eastman Chemical Uruapan.
This project will benefit 30 generations of children, who will have the possibility to develop their abilities in a better environment and with the due security guarantees, since Uruapan has a schooling of 7.85 years and 9.1 grades of schooling, which means a little more than the secondary school completed.
The inauguration event was attended by Prof. José Guadalupe Aguilera Rojas, Local Deputy for District XV of Pátzcuaro, Mr. Genaro Ríos Urban, Coordinator of community impact programs of Fondo Unido México and the staff of Eastman Chemical Company, as well as directors, parents and students of the school.
