International. A study by a group of scientists from India compares nano-gelcoats for marine applications based on vinylester and isophthalic polyester.
The article presents the moisture diffusion behavior of nano-gelcoats based on gravimetric and FTIR for hydrolysis. The influence of nanoclay on moisture diffusion from nano-gelcoats was studied using FTIR and gravimetric analysis.
Gravimetric data, infrared spectroscopy and glass transition temperature indicated that the addition of 1% by weight of nanoclay improved the moisture barrier, chemical retention and thermal properties of the polymers. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the dispersion of nanoclay in gelcoats. The hygrothermal behavior of the nano-gelcoat was studied at 30° C and 50° C in artificial seawater.
