International. The Committee of Member States (MSC) supported the French proposal to further identify bisphenol A as a substance of very high concern due to its endocrine disrupting properties that cause probable serious effects on human health. The committee also agreed to identify the substance PFHxS as an SVHC (Chemicals of Very High Concern).
The Member State Committee unanimously agreed to identify as substances of very high concern (SVHC) the following:
- 4,4'-isopropyliddenodiphenol (bisphenol A, BPA) (EC 201-245-8, CAS 80-05-7), proposed by France, due to its endocrine disrupting properties for human health
- Perfluorohexane-1-sulfonic acid and its salts (PFHxS), proposed by Sweden, due to its very persistent and very bioaccumulative properties (vPvB)
Bisphenol A is already listed in the Candidate List due to its toxic properties for reproduction. At the MSC meeting earlier this week, it unanimously agreed to its further identification as SVHC due to its endocrine-disrupting properties that cause serious likely effects on human health that generate an equivalent level of concern for carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic effects on reproduction (CMR category 1A or 1B).
ECHA (European Chemical Agency) will include PFHxS in the Candidate List and update the current BPA entry accordingly by the end of June 2017. Companies may have legal obligations with respect to these substances following the publication of the updated Candidate List.
