The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is located on Constitution Avenue, next to the National Museum of American History and the Washington Monument, and opened its doors on September 24.
Approaching the museum, visitors can observe the bronze color of the filigree exterior, which was created through a careful selection process using Valspar coatings reference Fluropon.
In the filigree, bronze panels cover the exterior of the building, perforated in patterns that refer to the history of African-American craftsmanship. Each of the 3,600 custom bronze-colored cast aluminum panels reflect wrought iron design by enslaved artisans in Charleston and New Orleans.
The density of the pattern varies to control the amount of sunlight and transparency allowed inside, and the bronze color is in stark contrast to the neighboring marble and limestone buildings.
The company explained that extensive testing was carried out during the coating application process due to the large size of the panels, and due to the complex design already cut into each piece. The coating was applied entirely by hand by the Hard Industries team, and each color layer was carefully inspected to make sure every part of the coating process was on the right track.
