Iranian researchers from the Institute of Color Science and Technology have improved the anticorrosive properties of polymer coatings by using graphene and creating nanocomposite structures.
Graphene oxide nanoparticles have been used in this research to create the nanocomposite structure and increase the protective properties of the epoxy-based anticorrosive coating.
The use of synthetic nanocomposite coatings to coat devices and equipment on land and in petrochemical units reduces expenses due to corrosion, and increases the service life of equipment, including pipelines.
The researchers indicate that graphene oxide-based nanoparticles have recently attracted their attention due to their unique properties. However, these materials are not compatible or stable in most organic solvents. Therefore, the process of surface modification should be carried out on these materials by using amine compounds.
Nanosheets are able to prevent the diffusion of corrosive agents in the coating or postpone diffusion for a while, due to their very high specific area. Therefore, the service life of the coating increases significantly.
