International. AkzoNobel's methodology for ship owners using sustainable liners has been named The Environmental Lead Product of the Year for 2016.
The award recognizes the introduction of the shipping industry's first carbon credit methodology, which was developed by the company's Marine Coatings business.
Launched in 2014 in conjunction with the Gold Standard Foundation and Fremco Group, the system is based on ship owners moving existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium, biocide-free coating such as Intersleek, part of AkzoNobel's international range of marine coatings.
Earlier this year, the Neda Maritime Agency Co Ltd, a tanker and bulk carrier owner from Greece, became the first owner in the world to receive carbon credits through the AkzoNobel system. The company received a total of 13,375 carbon credits – a potential value of around $60,000.
Each accumulated carbon credit corresponds to avoiding one ton of CO2 that is emitted into the atmosphere, which means that Neda Marítima has compensated with a total of 13,375 tons of CO2 from its business.
