PPG is recognized for its antimicrobial and antiviral paints

Pintura antimicrobiana

International. Two of its products won the R&D 100 awards in the Mechanics/Materials category.

Copper Armortm antimicrobial paint is one of them. According to the company, it is designed for application in high-traffic areas, including healthcare, hospitality, office and educational environments, as well as residential applications. It contains natural copper that is known to have antimicrobial efficacy.

The paint continuously kills viruses and bacteria, including SARS-CoV-2, within two hours of contact with the painted surface for up to five years. This provides protection against harmful microbes in walls, moldings and doors.

"At PPG, our teams are always looking for new and innovative ways to address our customers' biggest challenges," said PPG Vice President of Science and Technology and Chief Technology Officer David Bem.

"In some cases, that means developing new capabilities in-house. Others require strong partnerships with respected organizations, such as Corning. We are incredibly honored to be recognized for products that have helped provide an extra layer of protection amid the ongoing pandemic," Bem added.

For its part, the antiviral and antibacterial paint Comex Vinimex Total was also highlighted in the same category and additionally received the special R&D 100 Bronze recognition for fighting COVID-19.

The multinational said in a statement that it eliminates 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2, on the surface of dry paint in two hours.

"Paint was developed in response to growing trends in health and wellness and increased consumer awareness of the role of paint in creating a safe and healthy environment," PPG said, noting its ideal use in high-traffic facilities such as hospitals, schools and nursing homes.

Finally, the Spraymaster portable spray system was also recognized as a finalist for the R&D 100 award. This is designed specifically for exterior carpentry, "the system is up to 50% faster compared to brush/roller applications, providing fast drying and excellent opacity in a single layer," the company said.
