Mexico. The Gas division of the firm Petróleos Mexicanos, Pemex, announced an investment of close to $500 million (US$40.2 million) for the maintenance and repair of about 9,000 kilometers of pipelines.
Pemex's deputy director of pipelines, Víctor Domínguez, assured the Notimex news agency that the capital will be used in the next two years and that "the objective is to ensure the operations of the gas transportation system in the national territory."
The primary objectives of the investment are to prevent corrosive phenomena and structural failures that can cause leaks or explosions. "In 2011 it is expected to rehabilitate and certify the mechanical integrity of 6,000 kilometers and the remaining 3,000 will be ready by 2012," said Domínguez.
