Holland. The European Union has commissioned the Institute for Food and Biobasing (FBR) at Wageningen University and the Reporting Centre (Wageningen UR) to conduct pre-normative research on standards for bio-based products.
Using a research laboratory, and their knowledge and experience with bio-based products, the FBR and the NEN project coordinator are studying the demand for specific labelling for consumer information on bio-based products.
The project includes a total of 14 European research institutes and companies. The FBR is conducting specific research on quality requirements for bio-based products, based on laboratory tests on specific functional characteristics such as strength, flexibility, permeability, recyclability and organic degradability.
Communication on the characteristics and applications of bio-based products is another key objective of the project, with the aim of developing guidelines for the labelling of bio-based products, as well as the product information that is provided by this product.
The research is conducted in eight member states in Europe regarding product acceptance and communication demands comprising bio-based bio-based products. The results should lead with the rules and regulations of policy at European level.
