International. A study published in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, revealed that the performance of a transparent epoxy anticorrosive coating has been improved by incorporating modified nano silica into the polymer matrix.
The surface of the nano silica was treated with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimetoxisilane (GPTMS) in order to achieve adequate dispersion of the nanoparticles.
The surface grafting of GPTMS into the nanoparticles was detected using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and a dispersion stability test. The corrosion performance of coated mild steel specimens was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and performing salt spray tests.
The study indicated that the incorporation of 4-6% by weight in SiO2 nanoparticles possessed the best corrosion behavior. The electrochemical results agree with the morphological results of the surface, obtained from an electronic microscopic scan (SEM).
