With the use of nanospheres and nanostructured coating films, a researcher from the Public University of Navarra, Spain, developed new fiber optic sensors with which it will be possible to generate very specific optical effects, which would not be appreciable with the use of thicker films.
The project was carried out as part of the doctoral thesis of telecommunications engineer Miguel Hernáez Sáenz de Záitigui, but is currently in the process of applying for an international patent and it is expected that the advance can be applied in the future in various industries.
Precisely, in front of the uses that the sensors have, Hernáez explained that "these effects can be used to detect any type of physical or chemical variation in the space surrounding the fiber, depending on the type of nanocoating used. For example, sensors can be manufactured that detect variations in humidity, pH, temperature, the presence of different chemical compounds, among others."
