" Water-based polyurethane paints can successfully protect metal surfaces and keep them in good condition for an extended period of time," said Peter Schmitt, senior director of technology in coatings, adhesives and specialties at Bayer MaterialScience, as part of his presentation at Coatings Trends & Technologies 2011, an event held from September 13 to 14 in Oak Brook, Illinois.
The use of this type of coating is increasingly popular in high-demand areas such as construction, automobiles and as an industrial metal coating, which is why Bayer decided to conduct a study with a view to confirming the anticorrosive capacity of this technology.
The study presented by Schmitt discussed the advantages of choosing water-based coatings for direct metal applications, including low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ease of repair in the field and low energy consumption.
He also compared polyurethane and polyacrylate water-based resins in applications requiring corrosion resistance. To do this, the Bayer researcher performed a series of tests, including adhesion after one day, adherence after seven days and salt spray resistance tests.
The results of these tests showed that both polyurethane and water-based polyacrylate resins show excellent resistance to moisture. In addition, polyurethane coatings exhibit corrosion resistance with a single application layer, making them an ideal choice for formulators looking for corrosion-resistant products of direct application to metal.
