. According to a study published by research firm Freedonia Group, global demand for silicone will increase by 6.2% per year through 2015 and reach $16.7 billion.
This momentum will be encouraged by the Asia/Pacific region, which despite having endured the market slowdown in China by almost 20% in the last 10 years, will remain the largest consumer.
North America and Western Europe will also figure in the growth. Although these regions have historically been important for the market, they slowed down their consumption during the recession but, having overcome this period, they will increase their demands thanks to the rebound in the construction and production of motor vehicles.
According to the firm, electrical and electronic products will be just as significant over the next five years as they will be driven by applications for the LED market and solar energy production.
Finally, the study highlights as representative elastomers and gels since during the previous year they accounted for almost 80% of the total demand. However, for 2015 it will be the latter and other products of lower volume, those of greater relevance as they are indispensable for construction and the automotive sector.
