Brazil. The Solvay Group inaugurated on June 2 the Industrial Biotechnology Laboratory (IBL) with the purpose of expanding the development of innovations related to Sustainable Chemistry.
The laboratory's main focus is the research of new processes and processes derived from biomass and their transformation into innovative solutions to serve the company's markets. Fully integrated, the laboratory is able to cover the entire biomass value chain, from its characterization to the phase of obtaining new molecules and solutions.
In line with Solvay's global innovation strategy, the creation in Brazil of this new laboratory was the natural choice of the group's management. "Brazil is a privileged region in the world for the development of an economy based on renewable resources. The country meets all the required conditions, such as competitive agricultural chains and solid scientific knowledge in the area of biotechnology. These significant assets support our ambitions to grow our portfolio of innovations based on renewable resources," said Louis Neltner, Solvay Group's Global General Manager for Research and Innovation.
The new laboratory will work in partnership with the Solvay Group's global business units, as well as the group's 15 research and innovation centres, as well as external research and innovation partners. It occupies a building of about 600 m2 and has the most modern equipment.
The IBL has a team of qualified researchers, including technicians, doctors and external collaborators linked to research programs in partnership with various public and private institutions. The new unit is already born with a solid research program underway, which includes projects in the areas of aromas and fragrances, inorganic materials, surfactants, solvents and cellulose derivatives to meet the demands of different markets of action of the company.
