Brazil. The Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers (Abrafati) recently received the TOP Anamaco 2014 award in the Sustainability category, for its role in the paint industry by becoming one of the main responsible for the proper disposal of post-consumer PET bottles in Brazil.
Today, around 120 million bottles a year are used in the production of paints, representing at the same time, a technically suitable solution and an important contribution to sustainability.
The case presented highlights that the use of PET in the manufacture of paints avoids the expenditure of natural resources and energy for the production of replaced raw materials. At the same time, Abrafati considers it as the appropriate solution for the environment for about 10% of the bottles of this type used in Brazil. In addition, it opens up opportunities for waste pickers to have jobs, incomes and better living conditions. The practice also helps the business sector meet the goals set by the National Solid Waste Policy.
"We were very pleased with the industry's recognition of the recycling and reuse of waste in the production process. This is an example of the result of our efforts to spread knowledge for the technological development of the industry and its evolution towards the adoption of sustainable practices," said Dilson Ferreira, Executive Chairman of Abrafati.
