Chile. The company Aguamarina carried out a project in a network of mining aqueducts to combat corrosion through the prevention of the formation of microorganisms on metal surfaces.
The system used allows to carry out a monitoring in the quality of the water and its microbiological aspects in order to know and list the groups of microorganisms present in the pipes and that are a reason for corrosion.
According to the web portal Minería Chilena, the general manager of the company, Pamela Chávez, explained that the procedure is based on carrying out "the installation of online monitoring systems, where we position witnesses along the pipeline and with them we monitor the formation of the biofilms, regardless of the other conditions that the pipeline has, focusing only on microorganisms. With this we detect along the pipeline which are the risk areas, where more corrosion is formed and where it requires more cleaning."
In the same way, the company carries out tasks of simulation of extreme conditions that allow a study to be made on the way in which organisms react. This also allows to know the possibilities that the coating used in the tanks is appropriate.
