Germany. The chemical company Lanxess revealed that it has begun to use a new formulation method for algaecides in paints.
The German firm said several tests showed that it reduces the leaching of active ingredient from paints caused by rain by more than 50%, compared to conventional algaecides. By improving leaching behavior, the method extends the service life of façade coatings and can reduce the amount of active ingredient required.
In many European countries, architects and construction companies are legally required to deliver buildings without defects, which means they need to protect building surfaces from microbial coverage for a certain period of time.
Lanxess says that in many cases biocides are indispensable as a means to significantly extend the service life of façade coatings and meet the growing demands of the construction sector. However, its effectiveness slowly decreases over time.
The German company will present this new coating at the next European Coatings Show that will be held from March 19 to 21, 2013 in Nuremberg.
