United States. The National Government's Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (Serdp) selected Sherwin Williams' finishing division to lead a $1.4 billion investigation and develop a project that seeks to create a chemical agent-resistant powder coating (Carc) for use in military vehicles and support equipment.
Currently there are only Carc liquid coatings for the protection of surfaces against chemicals such as neurotoxic gases, but the use of these emit approximately 5.2 million pounds of VOC per year into the environment, so they seek to make them with powder coatings that do not contain these contaminants and that at the same time protect the health and safety of the applicators.

The study will be done at the manufacturer's facilities located in Chicago and Grove City.
