Latin America. The Mexican company AP Resinas has carried out a gradual evolution in its product portfolio with the aim of offering better performance properties and reducing the environmental impact of elements that cannot be left unused.
In this sense, the new ERA SAF552 emulsion emerges, an aqueous dispersion of a styrene-acrylic copolymer of an anionic nature, friendly to the environment and people's health according to the Global Harmonized System (GHS).
This product for waterproofing and eco-friendly elastomeric paints, with excellent resistance to moisture and alkalinity, is born from the evolution of SAF50, SAF52 and SAF501 emulsions.
In this way, the company with more than 30 years of experience in the chemical industry achieves a product that meets the most important attributes of each one individually, among which high viscosity, low water absorption, excellent adhesion and elongation stand out.
In turn, it was improved to offer an environmentally responsible technology by being free of ethoxylate alkylphenols (APEOS), used in numerous formulas for the production of materials such as defoamers, emulsions, resins, dispersants etc.
APEOS can degrade as alkylphenols (APs) in the environment. Among these are substances such as p-nonylphenol, octifenol, as well as decomposition products such as alkylphenol polyethoxylates, which are thus more aggressive.
Acrylates are characterized by having two reactive groups, which can easily react with styrene to form a copolymer that results in a highly crossed chain, developed to obtain more stable polymers with better shine, smoothness, hardness, resistance to acids, alkalis and moisture, which develops better color and pigment retention.
All these properties are gathered in the ERA SAF552 resin, designed for waterproofing formulations, exterior and interior paints, sealants and remediators.
In addition, thanks to its binding power, paints of different qualities and appearance can be formulated as matte or satin. These can use loads with high oil absorption and different structures in their formulation without losing their flexibility, without the need to use plasticizing additives.
The products produced have resistance to moisture, alkalinity and low water absorption. These make it perfect for coatings that are in contact with moisture-drying cycles with water, without losing adhesion both with the substrate and with the elements that make up the coating (paint, waterproofing, remediators or sealants), blistering or scaling, softening or swelling of the film.
The ERA SAF552 has excellent weather resistance, because after prolonged exposure, mainly to the sun, the emulsion does not yellow. It also provides protection to prevent loss of color of the pigment used at the end of the dry film.
As for the formulation of sealants and remediators, ERA SAF552 presents an excellent adhesion to the construction materials and resistance to alkalinity and efflorescence. It can be applied on concrete surfaces with high alkaline PH.
In resanadores, when used to repair defects in construction, it does not present contraction when drying that could interfere with adhesion.
One of the characteristics that distinguishes it is its mechanical stability during grinding mixing in the manufacture of the coating. In addition, it stands out for the ease in which the target viscosity can be achieved by adding the mixture of thickeners, thanks to its pH.
This new product offers great benefits, both for health and the environment, as well as properties in the final coating. Additionally, it can be used in different formulations with optimal performance.
