Germany. Bayer MaterialScience, which will operate under the new name Covestro from 1 September, celebrates an important anniversary: 50 years of production of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in Leverkusen.
This is a raw material that is mainly used for high-quality automotive and industrial coatings. They protect the body of the car and high-speed trains, and can withstand even the extreme weather conditions to which aircraft such as the Airbus A380 are subjected.
"As mobility increases, this requires high-performance, durable coatings that are also environmentally friendly," said Daniel Meyer, head of the paints, adhesives and specialty business unit at Bayer MaterialScience and Covestro. "Polyurethane coatings meet these requirements, precisely, and have established a firm place, especially in glossy finishes."
