The different investigations carried out by the Chemistry Directorate of the National Center for Scientific Research (CENIC) on corrosion have made it possible to create safer constructions in different areas of the island, so that corrosion does not cause the deterioration of materials in an accelerated way.Due to cuba's tropical climate, the concentrations of chloride ions (common saltpeter) and other corrosive agents are usually above the values allowed by international standards, which directly affects the damage of the materials of the infrastructures, which is exacerbated by relative humidity and temperature. All this is reflected in the wear and tear of metal and reinforced concrete structures in sports, industrial, recreational facilities, among others.
Abel Castañeda, head of CENIC's Materials Protection Group, explained that the compounds rise more from November to March, especially on the coast of the north coast. He also said that it is important to know the level of corrosion in the different areas to select the materials to be used in order to guarantee greater durability and useful life.
