Most of the world's ceilings are dark in color. Under a blazing sun the surface temperature of a colored roof can increase by up to 50 °C, reaching temperatures of 70 to 90 °C. This increased heat seeps into buildings and can cause negative effects on the energy used for cooling in buildings.
On the other hand, cool ceilings offer immediate and long-term benefits. The following are some highlights:

- Savings of up to 15% on energy use from air conditioning in single-story buildings.

Cool ceilings allow energy savings in the cooling system during hot summers. White surfaces reflect more than half of the radiation that reaches them.
If all urban roofs and flat roofs located in hot weather locations were white, the consequent 10% increase in global reflectivity would offset the warming effect of 24 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing 300 million cars from the roads over 20 years.
