International. In a significant breakthrough for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, AkzoNobel has launched an innovative powder coatings technology that promises to transform the safety and efficiency of battery systems.
This new solution, available in China, is designed to provide superior dielectric strength with a single application, thus addressing a critical need in the market.
Jeff Jirak, Head of AkzoNobel's Powder Coatings business, highlights that this technology is a crucial step forward: "We have developed a solution that eliminates the need for multiple applications to achieve the desired thickness. This not only improves safety, but also optimizes the efficiency of the production process."
The new technology allows customers to apply a single layer of coating that reaches the thickness needed to ensure high dielectric strength. This efficiency in application not only streamlines production, but also significantly reduces the time and associated costs. In addition, the coating offers superior resistance to thermal shock, immersion in water, and chemicals, bringing exceptional durability to battery system components such as cooling plates, side plates, and battery covers.
"This breakthrough demonstrates our continued commitment to innovation and safety," adds Jirak. "Our in-depth experience and expertise in powder coatings has allowed us to develop a solution that ensures consistent electrical insulation throughout the life of the components."
Since the 1960s, AkzoNobel's Resicoat range has been at the forefront of powder coatings technology, and a range specifically dedicated to electric vehicles was launched in 2023. This new product line is designed to meet the unique challenges of the EV industry, offering solutions that improve both the safety and performance of battery systems and electric motors.
